CANADA TRADE BALANCE, APRIL 2021

GOODS

In April 2021, Canada international trade balance in goods returned to a surplus of $594 million. Canada has reported a trade surplus in three of the last four months. Canada international exports of goods declined 1.0% to $50,206.6 million and imports of goods declined 4.7% to $49,612.7 million.

Canada’s goods trade surplus with the United States was $6,401.3 million in April 2021, down $2,205.6 million from March.  When compared to April 2020, Canada’s goods exports to the US were up 81.6% and goods imports from the US were up 53.3%. April 2020 was a low point for trade during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

In April 2021, Canada’s goods trade deficit with the European Union was $2,139.0 million, a widening of $508 million from March. Compared to April 2020, Canada’s goods exports to the EU were down 21.1% and goods imports from the EU were down 3.3%.

Canada’s goods trade deficit with China was $2,207.9 million in April 2021, narrowing $925.7 million from March. When compared to April 2020, Canada’s goods exports to China increased 16.5% and goods imports from China were up 10.4%.

SERVICES

Canada’s services trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted) recorded a deficit of $226 million in April 2021. This follows a surplus of $188 million recorded in March. Services exports declined 2.2% to $9,259 million and services imports were up 2.2% to $9,485 million.

When compared to April 2020, Canada’s imports of services were up 4.0% while exports of services were down 0.3%.

GOODS & SERVICES

Canada’s overall trade balance reported a surplus of $367.9 million in April 2021, reversing the trade deficit reported in March of $1,159.4 million. Imports of goods and services declined 3.6% to $59,097.7 million from the previous month. Exports of goods and services were down 1.2% month-over-month to $59,465.6 million.

Compared to April 2020, when trade was at a minimum due to the pandemic, Canada’s exports of goods and services were up 45.4% and imports of goods and services were up 27.9%.
