US RETAIL SALES, MAY 2021

Month over month (May 2021, seasonally adjusted)

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales declined 1.3% from the previous month to $620.2 billion in May. Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales decreased 1.7% ($9.7 billion). Food service and drinking place month-over-month receipts increased 1.8% ($1.2 billion).

Year-over-year (May 2021 vs May 2020, seasonally adjusted)

Compared to May 2020, US retail trade and food services increased 28.1% ($136.2 billion). Retail trade increased 24.4% ($108.4 billion), while food services and drinking places sales increased 70.6% ($27.8 billion).

Compared to February 2020, US retail trade and food services and drinking places increased 18.0%, as retail trade increased 20.3% and food services and drinking places increased 1.6%.

SECTOR ANALYSIS

Year-to-date (Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020, seasonally adjusted)

The United States Retail Trade and Food Services increased 24.0% ($581.5 billion) to $3,008.4 billion. Retail trade increased 23.9% ($521.1 billion), and food services and drinking places sales increased 24.4% ($60.4 billion).

Sales were up in 13 of 13 retail categories, the fastest gains (in percentage terms) being reported in clothing stores (+70.5%). The slowest gains (in percentage terms) were seen in food & beverage (+1.8%).
