FOOD SERVICES AND DRINKING PLACES, APRIL 2021

With April reference month results, year-over-year (Apr 2021 vs Apr 2020) and year-to-date (Jan-Apr21 vs Jan-Apr20) show rebounds in economic activity from the unprecedented declines observed in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Month-over-Month (Apr 2021 vs Mar 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts decreased 3.6% to $127.5 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts decreased 11.7% to $4.4 billion.

Only one of the provinces reported monthly increases in food services and drinking places: Newfoundland and Labrador (13.3%). Ontario (-16.1%) reporting the largest decline in percentage terms.

 

Year-over-Year (Apr 2021 vs Apr 2020, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 112.9%, the largest gain in percentage terms among the provinces. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 77.6%.

Nine provinces reported year-to-date increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Prince Edward Island reporting no data in March and April 2020.

 

Year-to-Date (Jan-Apr 2020 vs Jan-Apr 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 16.3% ($72.7 million). Canada's food services and drinking places receipts decreased 6.3% (-$1.2billion).

Five provinces reported year-to-date increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Nova Scotia (16.3%) reporting the largest gain,  and with Quebec and Ontario (-13.4%) reporting the largest declines, in percentage terms.

 

 

NOVA SCOTIA SECTORS

Nova Scotia Year-to-date Sales by Establishment Type (Jan-Apr 2020 vs Jan-Apr 2021, unadjusted for seasonality)

Limited-service eating places, accounting for increased 22.7% ($51.6 million). Full-service restaurants increased 21.5% ($27.1 million) to $38.6 million. Special food services decreased 30.3% (-$9.4 million). Drinking places data was unavailable.

 

 

  

LONG-RUN TREND

Canada and Nova Scotia (2013 to 2021, seasonally adjusted))

Nova Scotia's food services and drinking places receipts sales declined sharply in March 2020 (-32.4%) and April 2020 (-38.2%). Recovery began with rapid gains in May 2020 (+32.2%) and June 2020 (+34.3%). Nova Scotia experienced a short reversal in November and December 2020, but began a slow recovery in January (+18.0%), February 2021 (+1.0%)  and March 2021 (+1.8%) and declined again in April 2021 (-3.6%). Compared to February 2020 Food services and drinking places sales are -11.0% below their pre-pandemic levels.

National food services and drinking places sales declined 7.8% to $4.8 billion in October 2020. This decline was mostly due to the second wave of COVID-19 restrictions introduced in several provinces. By February 2021 (+7.0%) it looked like a recovery had has begun. March 2021 (+10.1%) and April (-11.7%) were down due to a third wave of COVID-19 restrictions. National food services and drinking places sales are still 30.6% below their pre-pandemic levels. Provincial food services and drinking places receipts remain between -3.2% and -37.2% below February 2020 levels.
