US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, JULY 2021

The United States Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 5.4% year-over-year in July. This follows the same year-over-year increase in June and 5.0% in May. This remains the largest 12-month increase in the CPI since August 2008. 

The seasonally adjusted monthly increase was 0.5% reflecting increases from shelter, food, energy, and new vehicles. The food index increased (+0.7%) as five of the major grocery store indexes and the index for food away from home rose month to month. The energy index rose 1.6% in July with a 2.4% increase in the gasoline index. Growth in the new vehicle index slowed to 1.7% from 2.0% in June. The used cars and truck component slowed to 0.2% in July, following a 10.5% increase in June and a 7.3% increase in May. Shelter costs were up 0.4% in July. 

The index for all items less food and energy was up 4.3% from July 2020, continuing an upward trend that started in January 2021 when the index was rising 1.4% year-over-year. The year over year rise in the index less food and energy slowed from last month but was the largest since December 1991. Over the past 12 months, the energy index was up 23.8% and the food index increased 3.4%
