NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES, JUNE 2021

With June reference month, year-over-year (June 2021 vs June 2020) and year-to-date (Jan-Jun 2021 vs Jan-Jun 2020) show rebounds in economic activity from the unprecedented declines observed in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Year-to-date (Jan-Jun 2021 vs Jan-Jun 2020, unadjusted)

In the first six months of 2021, Nova Scotia new motor vehicle unit sales increased 42.4%. The 23,277 new motor vehicles sold in Jan-Jun 2021 represent a sales value of $955.4 million, up 46.8% over Jan-Jun 2020.

In Canada new motor vehicles unit sales increased 31.0%. The 872,741 new motor vehicles sold in Jan-Jun 2021 represent a sales value of $40.8 billion, up 35.3% over Jan-Jun 2020.

Unit sales were up in all provinces with the largest increases in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, and with smallest increases in Ontario and Saskatchewan.

In Nova Scotia June 2021, unit sales increased 18.5% and national unit sales increased 3.0% with the largest increases in British Columbia and Nova Scotia. Unit sales declined in Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec compared to June 2020.

Nova Scotia sales values increased 29.3%, and national sales values increased 7.3%. Sales value had the largest year-over-year increase in Nova Scotia and British Columbia. Sales values were down in Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec.

 

Average Prices (Jan-Jun 2021 vs Jan-Jun 2020)

In Nova Scotia the new motor vehicles average price, on a year to date basis, increased 3.0%. National new motor vehicle average price, on a year to date basis, increased 3.3%.

Stronger gains were reported in Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, while average prices declined in New Brunswick and weaker growth was observed in British Columbia.  

Alberta continues to report the highest average unit price for new motor vehicle sales ($51,402). Newfoundland and Labrador reported the lowest average unit price ($40,706).

 

 

In Nova Scotia average unit prices for all motor vehicles was $41,045, Trucks/SUV averaged $43,909, and Passenger cars averaged $30,178.

Passenger Cars and Trucks/SUVs (Jan-Jun 2021 vs Jan-Jun 2020)

In the first six months of 2021, Nova Scotia unit sales of truck/SUV (79.1% of unit sales) increased 46.3%. Unit sales of passenger car increased 29.5%. Sales value of truck/SUV (84.7% of sales value) increased 48.9%. Sales value of passenger car increased 35.7%.

 

 

Country of Manufacture (Jan-Jun 2021 vs Jan-Jun 2020)

In the first six months of 2021, Nova Scotia unit sales of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (72.1% of unit sales) increased 37.5%. Unit sales of overseas manufactures increased 57.1%.

Nova Scotia sales value of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (75.5% of sales value) increased 42.2% . Sales value of overseas manufactures increased 62.8%
