US RETAIL SALES, AUGUST 2021

Month over month (August 2021 vs July 2021, seasonally adjusted)

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales increased 0.7% from the previous month to $618.7 billion in August 2021. Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 0.8% ($4.3 billion). Food service and drinking place month-over-month receipts remained the same at $72.0 billion.

Compared to August 2020, US retail trade and food services increased 15.1% ($81.0 billion). Retail trade increased 13.1% ($63.5 billion), while food services and drinking places sales increased 31.9% ($17.4 billion).

Compared to February 2020, US retail trade and food services and drinking places increased 17.7%, as retail trade increased 18.9% and food services and drinking places increased 8.7%.

SECTOR ANALYSIS

Year-to-date (Jan-Aug 2021 vs Jan-Aug 2020, seasonally adjusted)

The United States Retail Trade and Food Services increased 20.9% ($842.1 billion) to $4,866.8 billion. Retail trade increased 19.9% ($721.8 billion), and food services and drinking places sales increased 29.7% ($120.4 billion).

Sales were up in 13 of 13 retail categories, the fastest gains (in percentage terms) being reported in clothing stores (+59.4%). The slowest gains (in percentage terms) were seen in food & beverage stores (+2.6%).
