September 23, 2021FOOD SERVICES AND DRINKING PLACES, JULY 2021 With July reference month results, year-over-year (Jul 2021 vs Jul 2020) and year-to-date (Jan-Jul 2021 vs Jan-Jul 2020) show rebounds in economic activity from the unprecedented declines observed in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Month-over-Month (Jul 2021 vs Jun 2021, seasonally adjusted)
In July 2021, Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 4.5% to $133.3 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 11.0% to $6.0 billion. All provinces reported monthly increases in food services and drinking places, with Manitoba (+23.8%) reporting the largest gain, and Newfoundland and Labrador (+0.2%) reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.
Year-over-Year (Jul 2021 vs Jul 2020, seasonally adjusted)
Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 20.1% year over year. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 27.7%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Ontario (+30.5%) reporting the largest gain and Manitoba (+11.1%) reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

All reporting provinces had year-to-date increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Newfoundland and Labrador (+23.1%) reporting the largest gain and Manitoba (+4.4%) reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

Limited-service eating places, full-service restaurants and drinking places accounted for the recovery in unadjusted year-to-date food services and drinking place receipts. Only sales at special food services (including mobile and catering) were down.
Trends
Nova Scotia's food services and drinking places sales receipts declined sharply in March 2020 and April 2020. Steady and rapid gains were reported from May through October of 2020. Nova Scotia experienced a short reversal in November and December 2020, but began to recover again from January through March of 2021 before declining in April and May as new restrictions were imposed on another wave of COVID-19 infections. These restrictions were eased in June and July 2021, contributing to the renewed growth.
In July 2021, Saskatchewan (+9.1%), Manitoba (+1.9%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (+0.2%) reported receipts above the pre-pandemic period (February 2020).
Compared to February 2020 Nova Scotia's July 2021 food services and drinking places sales were 7.0% below their pre-pandemic levels. National food services and drinking places sales were still 4.9% below their pre-pandemic levels. Among the other provinces Ontario (-9.0%) reported the greatest level below the pre-pandemic benchmark.
