US RETAIL SALES, SEPTEMBER 2021

Month over month (September 2021 vs August 2021, seasonally adjusted)

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales increased 0.7% to $625.4 billion in September 2021. Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 0.8% ($4.4 billion) to $55.3 billion. Food service and drinking place receipts increased 0.3% ($193 million) to $72.4 billion. 

Year-over-year (September 2021 vs September 2020, seasonally adjusted)

Compared to September 2020, US retail trade and food services increased 13.9%. Retail trade increased 12.2% ($60.1 billion), while food services and drinking places sales increased 29.5% ($16.5 billion).

SECTOR ANALYSIS

Year-to-date (Jan-Sep 2021 vs Jan-Sep 2020, seasonally adjusted)

Retail trade increased 19.1%, and food services and drinking places sales increased 29.7%.

Sales were up in all retail categories, the fastest gains reported in clothing stores (+53.9%). The slowest gains were in food & beverage stores (+3.2%).
