UK LABOUR FORCE SURVEY, OCTOBER 2021

The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported today that the unemployment rate for the three-month period August 2021 to October 2021 averaged 4.2%.

The UK employment rate among those aged 16-64 averaged 75.5% from August to October 2021. This remained 1.1 percentage points lower than the pre-pandemic period (December 2019-February 2020).  The UK economic inactivity rate among those aged 16-64 averaged 21.2% from August to October 2021, up 1.0 percentage points from pre-pandemic levels.

From September to November 2021, the number of job vacancies in the UK was 1,219,000, which is 434,500 above pre-pandemic levels. While the number f job vacancies reached a new high record, the rate of growth in vacancies continued to slow down in the quarter, and the single month vacancy numbers declined for the first time since February 2021.

The impact of COVID-19 was more apparent in falling employment and labour force in Canada and Nova Scotia. In November 2021 Canada's employment increased while labour force reported a modest gain, which drove the unemployment rate down.  Nova Scotia reported modest growth in labour force but a larger gain in the employment which pushed down the unemployment rate.
