FOOD SERVICES AND DRINKING PLACES, OCTOBER 2021

With October reference month results, year-over-year (Oct 2021 vs Sep 2021) and year-to-date (Oct 2021 vs Oct 2020) show rebounds in economic activity from the unprecedented declines observed in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Month-over-Month (Oct 2021 vs Sep 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts decreased 2.2% to $148.3 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts decreased 0.5% to $6.2 billion. Three provinces reported monthly increases in food services and drinking places, with Prince Edward Island (0.9%) reporting the largest gain, and Saskatchewan (-3.8%) reporting the largest decline in percentage terms.

 

 

Year-over-Year (Oct 2021 vs Oct 2020, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 15.6%. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 29.8%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Quebec (55.0%) reporting the largest gain and Saskatchewan (11.9%) reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

 

 

Year-to-Date (Jan-Oct 2021 vs. Jan-Oct 2020, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 21.0% (+$232.4 million). Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 14.6% (+$6.7 billion).

Nine provinces reported year-to-date increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Newfoundland and Labrador (+22.7%) reporting the largest gain and Manitoba (+8.5%) reporting the smallest gain, in percentage terms. Data for Prince Edward Island is not available.

 

 

Nova Scotia Sales by Establishment Type (Jan-Oct 2021 vs. Jan-Oct 2020, unadjusted)

Compared with Jan-Oct 2020, the gains in food service and drinking place receipts have been most pronounced for Nova Scotia's limited-services eating places services restaurants (+$116.9 million) and full-services restaurants (+$101.7 million). In year-to-date percentage terms, the increases have been greatest for full-services restaurants (+27.0%) and limited-service eating places (+17.5%) with a smaller increase for special food services (+3.9%) and drinking places (+15.9%).

 

 

Trends (seasonally adjusted, Jan 2012 - Oct 2021)

Nova Scotia's Food services and drinking places month over month sales declined sharply in March 2020 (-32.5%) and April 2020 (-38.7%). Recovery began with rapid gains in May 2020 (+31.8%) and June 2020 (+34.7%). Nova Scotia experienced a short reversal in Nov-Dec 2020 but began a slow recovery in January (+1.4%) and February 2021 (+1.3%). Compared to February 2020 food services and drinking places sales in October 2021 are +3.5% above their pre-pandemic levels.

COVID-19 (Oct-21 vs. Feb-20)

After six consecutive monthly gains. National food services and drinking places sales declined 7.7% to $4.7 billion in October 2020. This decline was mostly due to the second wave of COVID-19 restrictions introduced in several provinces. By February 2021 recovery had begun. National food services and drinking places sales are still 1.2% below their pre-pandemic levels. In October 2021, seven provinces report they are above February levels, and three provinces are below February 2020 levels.
