January 19, 2022UK CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2021 
The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that for December 2021, the UK Consumer Price Index including owner-occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) rose by 4.8% compared to December 2020. This was up from the 4.6% year-over-year increase recorded in November.
The main upward contributor to the change in the 12-month inflation rate was higher costs for housing and household services and transportation.
Year-over-year growth in the Consumer Price Index excluding owner occupiers' housing costs (CPI) was 5.4%. This was up from 5.1% increase recorded in November.
The UK inflation rate has declined in recent years, from a period in 2017 when it was over 2.5% to around 1.5% at the end of 2019. In 2020, inflation in the UK fell further, but to a lesser extent than the decline for inflation in Canada. Inflation in the UK rose slower than Canada during most of 2021, but in recent months has been at a similar rate.
ANNUAL
In 2021, average annual UK inflation including owner-occupied housing (UK-CPIH) was 2.5% while inflation excluding owner-occupied housing costs (UK-CPI) averaged 2.6%. This is above annual average inflation in the UK over the last decade but is below inflation recorded in Canada in 2021.
