EU AND EURO AREA CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2021

Year-over-year (December 2021 vs December 2020)

The inflation rate moved up to 5.3% in the European Union and to 5.0% in the Euro Area in December 2021.

The fastest inflation was reported in Estonia (+12.0%) and Lithuania (+10.7%) and the lowest inflation rates were in Malta (+2.6%) and Portugal (+2.8%).                              

Food price inflation increased to 4.3% in the European Union and to 3.6% in the Euro Area.

Energy inflation moved down slightly to 24.6% in the European Union and 25.9% in the Euro Area.

Excluding the impacts of energy, food, alcohol and tobacco prices inflation increased to 3.0% in the European Union and was unchanged at  2.6% in the Euro Area in December.

 

ANNUAL 2021

Annual inflation was 2.9% for the European Union was 2.6% for the Euro Area in 2021. These are higher rates than were experienced over 2012-2020. In 2011, inflation rates in the European Union (2.9%) and Euro Area (2.7%) inflation were at similar rates as 2021.
