FOOD SERVICES AND DRINKING PLACES, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2021

With December reference month results, year-over-year (Dec 2021 vs. Dec 2020) and year-to-date (2021 vs. 2020) show rebounds in economic activity from the unprecedented declines observed in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Month-over-Month (Dec 2021 vs. Nov 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts decreased 6.6% to $140.6 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts decreased 3.1% to $6.0 billion. None of the provinces reported monthly increases in food services and drinking places, with Manitoba (-1.0%) reporting the smallest decline, and Nova Scotia (-6.6%) reporting the largest decline in percentage terms.

 

 

Year-over-Year (Dec 2021 vs. Dec 2020, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 29.0%. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 42.3%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Quebec (56.8%) reporting the largest gain and Newfoundland and Labrador (5.7%) reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

 

 

Annual (2021 vs. 2020, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 21.0% (+$282.3 million). Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 18.3% (+$10.1 billion). Nine provinces reported year-to-date increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Quebec (21.8%) reporting the largest gain and Manitoba (13.6%) reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms. Data forPrince Edward Island is not available.

 

 

Nova Scotia Sales by Establishment Type (2021 vs. 2020, unadjusted)

Compared with 2020, the gains in food service and drinking place receipts have been most pronounced for Nova Scotia's full-service eating places services restaurants ($132.7 million) and limited-services restaurants ($129.3 million). In annual percentage terms, the increases have been greatest for full-services restaurants (+30.0%) and drinking places (+22.3%) with a smaller increase for special food services (+15.0%) and limited-service eating places (+15.9%).

 

 

Trends

Nova Scotia's Food services and drinking places month over month sales declined sharply in March 2020 (-32.4%) and April 2020 (-38.2%). Recovery began with rapid gains in May 2020 (+32.2%) and June 2020 (+34.3%). Nova Scotia experienced a short reversal in November and,  December 2020, but began a quick recovery in January (+18.0%) and February 2021 (+2.1%). Another reversal occurred in April-May 2021, followed by a quick recovery in June 2021. Compared to February 2020 food services and drinking places sales in December 2021 are -1.9% below their pre-pandemic levels.

National food services and drinking places sales are -4.0% below their pre-pandemic levels. In December 2021, four provinces report they are above February 2020 levels, and six provinces are below February 2020 levels.
