US EMPLOYMENT, FEBRUARY 2022

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that US non-farm payroll employment increased 678,000 from January to February 2022.  US employment remains 2.1 million lower than it was in the month before the COVID-19 pandemic. US employment has recovered 90.4% of the employment lost between February and April of 2020.

In February  2022, US employment increased in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, health care, construction, transportation and warehousing, retail, manufacturing, financial activities, social assistance, repair/maintenance, wholesale trade and mining.  Employment was little changed in information and government.

The US unemployment rate declined 0.2 percentage points to 3.8% in February 2022. US unemployment was 6.3 million in February 2022. The US unemployment rate remains 0.3 percentage points higher, while the number of unemployed persons was by 0.6 million higher than in February 2020. 

The US participation rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 62.3% of the working age population in February 2022, this is 1.1 percentage points below its February 2020 level.

The US employment to population ratio increased 0.2 percentage points to 59.9% in February 2022. This is 1.3 percentage points lower than its February 2020 level.

Note: Canadian and US labour force statistics refer to different working-age cohorts.
