March 18, 2022RETAIL TRADE, JANUARY 2022 MONTH OVER MONTH (seasonally adjusted Jan 2022 vs. Dec 2021)
In Nova Scotia retail trade increased 7.0% to $1,605.7 million. Nationally, retail trade increased 3.2% to $58.9 billion.
Nine provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with Nova Scotia (7.0%) reporting the largest gain and Saskatchewan (-0.3%) reporting the only decline.

In Nova Scotia retail trade increased 6.8%. Nationally, retail trade increased 12.0%.
Ten provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with Quebec (25.4%) reporting the largest gain, and British Columbia (2.1%) reporting the smallest gain.

Retail trade increased 4.0% or $49.2 million.
In dollar terms, gas stations ($25.0 million) contributed most to the increase. General merchandise $8.1 million) and Motor vehicle ($6.4million ) also contributed to the increase. Declines were reported in Clothing (-$3.2 million) and Sporting and Hobbies stores ($1.6 million).
TRENDS
While there was a sharp decline at the onset of the pandemic in 2020, retail sales returned to pre-COVID level relatively quickly in 2020 and have been on an upward, although volatile, trend over the past 18 months.
E-Commerce (seasonally adjusted Jan 2016 to Jan 2022)
In January 2022, Canada's ecommerce sales increased 8.3% to $3.4 billion or 5.8% of total retail sales.
