US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, MARCH 2022

Month over month (Mar-22 vs Feb-22, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)                                                    

US residential building permits increased 0.4% over the previous month to 1,873,000. Single unit structures were down -4.8%. Structures with 2 to 4 units were unchanged.  Structures with 5 units or more were up 10.9%.                                                           

US housing starts increased 0.3% over the previous month to 1,793,000. This is largest number of starts in over 13 years (January 2009 starts = 490,0000).                                            

                                               

Year over year (Mar-22 vs Mar-21, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)                                                            

US residential building permits increased 6.7% over the same month last year. Permits for single unit structures decreased 3.9%. Permits for structures with 2 to 4 units decreased -6.9%. Permits for structures with 5 units or more increased 33.6%.                                             

US housing starts increased 3.9% over the same month last year. Starts for single unit structures decreased 4.4%. Starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 28.1%.                                                           

                                                               

Year to date (Jan-Mar 2022 vs Jan-Mar 2021, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)                                       

US residential building permits increased 5.0% over the same period last year to 1,878,000. Permits for single unit structures declined -1.2%. Permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 2.5%. Permits for structures with 5 units or more were up 19.2%.                                                          

Housing starts are up 9.7% over the same period last year to 1,753,000. Starts for single unit structures increased 3.5%. Starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 25.6%.
