FOOD SERVICES AND DRINKING PLACES, FEBRUARY 2022

Month-over-Month (Feb 2022 vs. Jan 2022, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 14.8% to $144.8 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 20.7% to $6.4 billion. All provinces reported monthly increases in food services and drinking places, with Quebec (33.6%) reporting the largest gain, and Saskatchewan (6.3%) reporting the smallest gain, in percentage terms.

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 10.3%. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 40.9%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Quebec (54.5%) reporting the largest gain and Prince Edward Island (6.8%) reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

Year-to-Date (Jan-Feb 2022 vs. Jan-Feb 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 4.3% ($11.2 million). Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 33.4% ($2.9 billion). Nine provinces reported year-to-date increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Ontario (40.7%) reporting the largest gain and Prince Edward Island (-4.0%) reporting the only decline in percentage terms.

  

Nova Scotia Sales by Establishment Type (Jan-Feb 2022 vs. Jan-Feb 2021, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia total year-to-date receipts  in food services and drinking places increased in all establishments by 6.2% ($13.2 million) over the same period last year. Special food services increased the most at 32.1% ($3.1 million) followed by drinking places at 28.7% ($1.0 million). Full-services restaurants increased (8.3% ($6.0 million) and limited service eating places increased 2.4% ($3.2 million).

 

 

Trends 

Food service receipts have been very sensitive to the imposition of COVID-related restrictions on travel, gathering and dining in restaurants. Compared to February 2020, Nova Scotia's  food services and drinking places sales in February 2022 were 1.0% above their pre-pandemic levels. 

In February 2022, national food service receipts were 0.9% above pre-pandemic levels. Most provinces reported February food services receipts that were above pre-pandemic levels. Only Quebec (-4.4%), Manitoba (-0.1%) and Alberta (-1.0%) reported receipts below February 2020 levels.
