WHOLESALE TRADE, MARCH 2022

MONTH-OVER-MONTH (seasonally adjusted, Mar 2022 vs. Feb 2022)

Nova Scotia's wholesale trade increased 1.4% to $1,139.6 million. Canada's wholesale trade increased 0.3% to $79.8 billion. Six provinces reported monthly increases in wholesale trade, with Newfoundland and Labrador reporting the largest gain, and Saskatchewan reporting the largest decline

YEAR-OVER-YEAR (seasonally adjusted, Mar 2022 vs. Mar 2021)

Nova Scotia's wholesale trade increased 3.0%, and Canada's wholesale trade increased 12.4%.  Compared with March 2021, wholesale trade is up in all provinces, led by Saskatchewan.  Nova Scotia reported the least growth over this period.

YEAR-TO-DATE (seasonally adjusted, Jan-Mar 2022 vs. Jan-Mar 2021)

Nova Scotia wholesale trade increased 6.9% compared with the first three months of 2021. Canada's wholesale trade increased 14.9%. All provinces reported year to date increases in wholesale trade, with Saskatchewan reporting the largest gain and Nova Scotia reporting the smallest.

NOVA SCOTIA SECTORS (seasonally adjusted, Jan-Mar 2022 vs. Jan-Mar 2021)

Nova Scotia total wholesale trade increased 6.9% ($221 million). The largest contributions to overall gain came from miscellaneous wholesalers and building materials wholesalers.  

 

TRENDS 

Nova Scotia's wholesale trade rebounded sharply from the pandemic decline, rising much more quickly than the national average in early 2021.  Over the past year, Nova Scotia's wholesale trade has returned to the national trend.  

INVENTORIES (Canada Mar 2022)

National inventories increased 0.4% from February to March 2022.  The national ratio of inventories to sales was stable at 1.36 in March.
