MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, APRIL 2022

Month over month (seasonally adjusted, April 2022 vs. March 2022)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 2.6% to $902.7 million. National shipments increased 1.7% to $72.30 billion.

Manufacturing shipments were up in 6 of 10 provinces, led by New Brunswick and Alberta. Saskatchewan and British Columbia reported the largest declines.

 

Year over year (seasonally adjusted, April 2022 vs. April 2021)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments increased 12.8%. National shipments increased 24.1%.

Manufacturing shipments were up in 9 of 10 provinces, led by New Brunswick and Alberta. NL was the only province to report a decline.

Year to date (seasonally adjusted, Jan-Apr 2022 vs. Jan-Apr 2021)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments increased 5.5%. National shipments increased 20.1%.

Manufacturing shipments were up in 9 of 10 provinces, led by New Brunswick and Alberta. Newfoundland and Labrador was the only province to report a decline.

 

 

Nova Scotia's durable goods shipments increased 2.3%, while non-durable goods shipments increased 7.5%. In Halifax, durable goods shipments decreased 4.6%, while non-durables increased 5.6%. Outside Halifax,  durable goods shipments increased 10.2%, while non-durables increased 7.9%.

Trends 

In the nine months leading up to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing shipments had been trending down both in Canada and in Nova Scotia. 

After the pandemic was declared, Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments declined sharply from February 2020 to May 2020. National shipments reached their trough earlier in April 2020.

Since then, Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments have recovered and were 19.2% higher in April 2022 than in February 2020. National shipments have also been trending upwards since August 2020 and were 27.9% higher in April 2022 when compared to February 2020 levels.
