RETAIL TRADE, APRIL 2022

Month-over-month (April 2022 vs March 2022, seasonally adjusted )

Nova Scotia's retail trade increased 0.9% to $1,621.3 million. Nationally, retail trade increased 0.9% to $60.7 billion. Eight provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with Saskatchewan reporting the largest gain and Manitoba reporting the largest decline.

Year-over-year (April 2022 vs April 2021)

Nova Scotia retail trade increased 4.7% over the previous year. Nationally, retail trade increased 9.2%. Nine provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with Ontario reporting the largest gain. Prince Edward Island reported the only decline.

Year-to-date (January-April 2022 vs. January-April 2021)

Nova Scotia retail trade increased 4.4%. Nationally, retail trade increased 8.4%. All ten provinces reported year-to-date increases in retail trade, with Ontario reporting the largest gain and British Columbia reporting the smallest gain.

In retail sales by category, Nova Scotia's year-to-date retail sales were up most in dollar terms from gas stations, general merchandise stores and food/beverage stores.  Furniture stores reported the largest percentage gains.  Motor vehicles and parts reported the only decline among Nova Scotia's broad retail categories.

Trends

 

Retail sales declined sharply during periods of pandemic-related restrictions.  In May 2021, there was a sharper reduction in retail sales in Nova Scotia than at the national level.  However, since then Nova Scotia's retail sales growth has generally been faster than the national pace.

E-Commerce 

In April 2022, Canada's ecommerce sales increased 0.9% to $3.27 billion or 5.4% of total retail sales.
