UK CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, MAY 2022

The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that for May 2022, the UK Consumer Price Index including owner-occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) rose by 7.9% compared to May 2021. This was up from the 7.8% year-over-year increase recorded in April.

The increase in the 12-month inflation rate was driven mainly by higher housing and household services (particularly electricity, gas and other fuels and owner occupiers' housing costs), and transport costs (particularly motor fuels and second-hand cars).

Year-over-year growth in the Consumer Price Index excluding owner occupiers' housing costs (CPI) was 9.1%. This was up from 9.0% increase recorded in April.

In 2020, inflation in the UK fell, but to a lesser extent than the decline for inflation in Canada. Inflation in the UK rose slower than Canada during most of 2021, but in recent months has been trending higher at a faster rate than Canada.
