The largest portion of the population counted in the 2021 Census were in census families.  In Nova Scotia, 48.5% of the population are either spouses in a married couple or a common law partner.  A further 17.6% of the population were children (of any age) living in a family with 2 parents.  Lone parent families accounted for 12.8% of Nova Scotia's population, including 5.1% who were lone parents (highest among provinces) and 7.7% who were children in lone parent families.

Among those not living in a census family in Nova Scotia, 13.8% of the population were living alone (the second highest share after Quebec) as well as 5.2% who were living with non-relatives only (second highest share after British Columbia).
