RETAIL TRADE, JULY 2022

MONTH OVER MONTH (seasonally adjusted July 2022 vs. June 2022)

In Nova Scotia retail trade increased 0.7% to $1,673.0 million. Nationally, retail trade decreased 2.5% to $61.3 billion. Seven provinces reported monthly decreases in retail trade, with Ontario (-5.0%) reporting the largest decline and Newfoundland and Labrador (+2.5%) reporting the largest gain.

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (seasonally adjusted July 2022 vs. July 2021)

In Nova Scotia retail trade increased 9.4% over July 2021. Nationally, retail trade increased 8.0%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with Prince Edward Island (+14.1%) reporting the largest gain. British Columbia (+4.2%) reported the smallest gain.

 

YEAR TO DATE (seasonally adjusted Jan-Jul 2022 vs. Jan-Jul 2021)

Nova Scotia retail trade increased 7.4%. Nationally, retail trade increased 9.7%. All provinces reported year-to-date increases in retail trade, with Ontario (+15.2%) reporting the largest gain and British Columbia (+2.2%) reporting the smallest gain.

Retail trade increased 6.9% or $716.9 million. In dollar terms, gas stations, general merchandise, health/personal care, clothing, and food and beverage stores contributed most to the increase. In percentage terms, clothing, gas stations, and furniture stores reported the largest gains. Motor vehicles and parts and electronics and appliances stores were the only categories to report a year-to-date percentage decline over the previous period.

 

Trends

 

Retail sales declined sharply during periods of pandemic-related restrictions. In May 2021, there was a sharper reduction in retail sales in Nova Scotia than at the national level. National and Nova Scotia’s retail sales have similar trend in recent months. 

 

E-Commerce 

In July 2022, Canada's ecommerce sales decreased 0.7% to $3.66 billion or 6.0% of total retail sales.
