In Nova Scotia retail trade decreased 1.3% to $1,648 million. Nationally, retail trade increased 0.7% to $61.8 billion. Six provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with British Columbia reporting the largest gain and Prince Edward Island reporting the largest decline.

In Nova Scotia retail trade increased 5.3% over August 2021, the smallest gain among the provinces. Nationally, retail trade increased 7.0%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with Manitoba reporting the largest gain.

Nova Scotia retail trade increased 7.0%. Nationally, retail trade increased 9.3%. All provinces reported year-to-date increases in retail trade, with Ontario reporting the largest gain and British Columbia reporting the smallest gain.

In dollar terms, gas stations and general merchandise stores contributed most to the year-to-date increase in retail sales. In percentage terms, clothing, gas stations, and furniture stores reported the largest gains. Motor vehicles and parts and electronics/appliances stores were the only categories to report a year-to-date percentage decline over the previous period.
Trends
Retail sales declined sharply during periods of pandemic-related restrictions. National and Nova Scotia’s retail sales have followed similar trend in recent months.
E-Commerce
In August 2022, Canada's ecommerce sales increased 4.9% to $3.86 billion or 6.3% of total retail sales.
