December 20, 2022RETAIL TRADE, OCTOBER 2022 MONTH OVER MONTH (seasonally adjusted Oct 2022 vs. Sep 2022)
In Nova Scotia retail trade increased 5.9% to $1,714 million. Nationally, retail trade increased 1.4% to $62.0 billion. Nine provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia reporting the largest gains and Ontario reporting the only decline.

In Nova Scotia retail trade increased 6.8%. Nationally, retail trade increased 6.4%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade with New Brunswick leading the way, and British Columbia reporting the lowest increase.
YEAR TO DATE (seasonally adjusted Jan-Oct 2022 vs. Jan-Oct 2021)
Nova Scotia retail trade increased 6.2%. Nationally, retail trade increased 8.7%. All provinces reported year-to-date increases in retail trade, with Ontario reporting the largest gain and British Columbia reporting the smallest gain.

In dollar terms, motor vehicles/parts stores and food and beverage establishments contributed most to the year-to-date increase in retail sales. In percentage terms, clothing, gas stations, and furniture stores reported the largest gains. Motor vehicles/parts and electronics/appliances stores were the only categories to report a year-to-date percentage decline over the previous period.
Trends
Retail sales moved sharply during periods of pandemic-related restrictions. National and Nova Scotia’s retail sales have followed similar trend in recent months with Nova Scotia growth index exceeding the national index in September and October 2022.
E-Commerce
In October 2022, Canada's ecommerce sales decreased 4.6% over September 2020 to $3.56 billion, or 5.8% of total retail sales.
