January 10, 2023ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLEAN TECHNOLOGICAL PRODUCT ACCOUNT, 2021 The Environmental and Clean Technology Products Economic Account measures the contribution to the Canadian economy of goods and services that reduce environmental impacts. Two broad categories of goods and services are recognized: environmental goods and services (including clean electricity, biofuels and primary goods, and waste management and remediation services), and clean technology goods and services (including manufactured goods, scientific and research and development services, construction services, and support services).
In Nova Scotia the gross domestic product (GDP) generated by the environmental and clean technology (ECT) products sector grew 15.0% to $889.0 million in 2021 as compared to 2020. The national GDP generated by the ECT grew 7.7% to $73.1 billion in 2021.
In 2021, total ECT GDP grew in eight provinces led British Columbia (+16.6%), Alberta (+14.5%), and Nova Scotia (+15.0%). ECT GDP declined in Newfoundland and Labrador (-8.5%) and Manitoba (-1.1%).
In 2021, Nova Scotia environmental products GDP increased 8.0% to $350.0 million and nationally increased 5.6% compared to 2020. Environmental products GDP increased in eight of the ten provinces. The highest growth was in British Columbia (+18.2%) and Alberta (+18.2%). Greatest decline was seen in Saskatchewan at 7.0%.
In 2021, Nova Scotia clean technology products GDP increased by 20.0% to $539.0 million and nationally increased 10.3% compared to 2020. Clean technology products GDP increased in seven provinces led by Nova Scotia. Clean technology products GDP declined most in Newfoundland and Labrador (-24.2%) followed by Manitoba (-16.1%).
In 2021, over half (60.6%) of the Nova Scotia GDP from ECT products was attributable to the to the production of clean technology products. There were increases in all clean technology products goods and services as well as in environmental products of goods and services. Most significant increase in percentage terms came from clean technology products in waste and scrap goods (+50.0%), though it had a small contribution to the total ECT GDP, as well as construction services (+42.4%).
In 2021, Nova Scotia total employment in ECT activity was 5,501 and nationally was 314,257. Nova Scotia employment in ECT activity grew by 8.5% and nationally increased 6.5% compared to 2020. Total employment in ECT activity increased in 6 provinces led by Quebec (+10.2%) and Alberta (+9.4%). Total employment in ECT activity declined the most in Prince Edward Island (-10.8%).
Nova Scotia employment in ECT increased in 5 out of 6 industries in 2021. The highest gain was in engineering and construction industry (+28.0%) while the only decline happened in other industries (-5.5%).
