Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts decreased 1.8% to $182.0 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts declined 2.2% to $7.7 billion. All provinces reported monthly declines in receipts for food services and drinking places, with Prince Edward Island and Ontario reporting the smallest declines and Quebec recording the largest decline.
Year-over-year (March 2023 vs March 2022)
Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 12.3%. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 12.9%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Prince Edward Island reporting the largest gains and Quebec reporting the smallest gain.
Year-to-date (January - March 2023 vs January - March 2022)
Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 31.1%. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 26.6%. All provinces reported year-to-date increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Prince Edward Island reporting the largest gains and New Brunswick reporting the smallest gain.
Nova Scotia's year-to-date gains in food service receipts are primarily attributable to the increases in limited service eating places as well as full-service restaurants. In percentage terms, however the gains were faster for special food services and drinking places.
Trends
Food services and drinking places have reported repeated downturns during imposition of COVID restrictions. As these restrictions eased, food service receipts have rebounded, and Nova Scotia has surpassed its pre-pandemic levels. In Canada and all the provinces negative month over month growth was recorded in March 2023.
