EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE, JUNE 2024

Monthly (June 2024 vs May 2024, seasonally adjusted regular beneficiaries)

In June 2024, there were 21,420 Nova Scotians in receipt of regular employment insurance benefits (seasonally adjusted). Nova Scotia's seasonally adjusted regular employment insurance usage decreased by 40 (-0.2%) from May to June. 

There were 473,980 Canadians that received regular employment insurance benefits in June 2024 (seasonally adjusted), an increase of 5,980 (+1.3%) from May 2024. 

When compared to May 2024, seven provinces reported increased in regular beneficiaries. The largest increase in percentage terms was reported in Newfoundland and Labrador and the fastest decline was in Alberta.

The number of employment insurance beneficiaries amounted to 3.9% of the labour force in Nova Scotia in June 2024. Nationally, the share of beneficiaries was 2.2% of the labour force. Newfoundland and Labrador had the largest share of beneficiaries of the labour force, while British Columbia had the lowest. 

Year-to-date (January-June 2024 vs January-June 2023)

Comparing the first six months of 2024 to the same period in 2023, Nova Scotia's employment insurance usage was up by 0.5%. National employment insurance usage was up by 16.8% with gains in eight provinces. The largest gain in employment insurance usage was in Ontario, while the largest decline was in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Use of employment insurance (as a share of the labour force) was lower for youth aged 15-24 and higher for workers aged 55 and older. Across all age cohorts, male use of employment insurance was higher as a share of the labour force than female use of employment insurance. 

Use of employment insurance was up for all age and sex cohorts except females age 15-24. 

Comparing unadjusted regular beneficiaries for June 2024 against June 2023, use of employment insurance grew for thirteen counties with the fastest growth for Victoria and Inverness counties. Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby had the only decline in employment insurance. Lunenburg and Cape Breton had no change in employment insurance usage.
