Quarter-over-quarter (all countries, seasonally adjusted, Q2 2024 vs. Q1 2024)
Canada's current account receipts increased $1.2 billion to $310.1 billion while current account payments increased $4.3 billion to $318.5 billion. The resulting net current account deficit widened by $3.1 billion to $8.5 billion.
Goods exports were down $1.7 billion to $193.9 billion while goods imports were up $3.8 billion to $196.1 billion. As a result, the goods balance expanded to $2.2 billion.
Services exports were up $0.8 billion to $51.0 billion while services imports decreased $0.3 billion to $54.3 billion. The services deficit narrowed by $1.1 billion to $3.2 billion.
Primary income receipts decreased $1.5 billion to $59.8 billion while primary income payments increased $0.5 billion to $62.1 billion. The primary income deficit grew by $2.0 billon to $2.3 billion.
Secondary income receipts increased $0.2 billion to $5.4 billion while secondary income payments increased by $0.3 billion to $6.1 billion. The resulting net secondary income deficit grew by $0.1 billion to $0.7 billion.
International trade in goods is the main determinant of Canada's balance of international payments, followed by primary income flows (including interest and divided income) and services trade. Secondary income flows (such as remittances and overseas development assistance) represent a smaller portion of Canada's international balance of payments.
