Labour Day - a Statutory Holiday? : NS Labour and Advanced Education, Employment Rights

Labour Day

Labour Day is one of the general (paid) holidays listed in the Nova Scotia Labour Standards Code.

There are 6 general holidays listed in the Code:

  • New Year's Day
  • Nova Scotia Heritage Day (starting in 2015)
  • Good Friday
  • Canada Day
  • Labour Day
  • Christmas

These are the minimum number of holidays that employers must provide to employees. Many employers offer more paid holidays.

Labour Day is a designated retail closing day. Many retail businesses are prohibited from opening on Labour Day. Employees in such businesses have the right to refuse to work on that day if called into work while the store is closed.
