IMAGE INFORMATION

John Noel was born 3 May 1829, at Port Harbour, Pictou County, N.S., and died 20 May 1911, at the Spring Brook Reserve, Shubenacadie, N.S. He was the son of Louis Noel (1790-1849). His widowed mother married Chief Jacques-Pierre Peminuit Paul, who adopted John as his son (John succeeded him as chief after Paul's death in 1895). John Noel married a Penall (Bernard) woman from Chester; none of their children survived to maturity. His second marriage, in March 1870, was to Marie Antoinette Thomas, widow of Peter Sack; he in turn adopted her sons, having no living offspring of his own. This is one of his last known portraits.
