Inscription on reverse by curator Harry Piers: "John Noel, chief of the Indians of Halifax, Lunenburg, Hants, Kings, Colchester, and Cumberland Counties, Nova Scotia. Dressed in typical Micmac ornamented coat, with red sash; and with round silver medal presented to Micmac chief by George III, and gilt medallion presented by the Pope [to Chief Jacques-Pierre Peminuit Paul in 1856]. Chief Noel was born at Pictou, N.S., on 3 May 1829, and is now 81 years of age (80 years old when the photograph was taken)." Photo by Climo of Halifax; taken in 1910. [Later note adds:] "Chief John Noel died on Saturday, 20 May 1911, at his house at the Indian Reservation on Spring Brook, 3 1/8 miles west of Shubenacadie, Hants Co., N.S., aged 82 years, and was buried at Shubenacadie on 23 May. Noel means Christmas."
