IMAGE INFORMATION

The artist (1815-1893) served in Canada 1834-1838, as an Ensign in the 85th Regiment. "The son of an Irish nobleman, Butler was promoted to Lieutenant in 1838 and Captain in 1842, and resigned from the army in 1846." [National Archives Accession Notes.] He kept a diary from 27 December 1837 to 11 February 1838, during a march of the regiment from New Brunswick to Québec. Fourteen sketches were found therein. Three are dated 1837, and many were done in Nova Scotia, apparently on a moose-hunting trip. [Thanks to Jim Burant, National Archives, for bringing this to our attention.] The canoe-ends are inaccurate.
