IMAGE INFORMATION

Andrew Alex, here shown standing in a field of flowers, was the putu's, keeper of the ceremonial wampum belts, read each year at the St. Anne's Day celebrations at Indian Island, now Chapel Island, N.S. The church of St. Anne is in the background, across the water from the mainland. The shot is out of focus, but Mr. Alex apparently has a purple wampum belt with white designs across his chest; he holds a long white wampum belt with a design of white crosses on a rectangular purple ground in his left hand, as well as a small object, not in focus. In his right hand he may be holding a pipe or another belt. This photo is one of two taken on the same occasion, with Mr. Alex wearing a dark shirt and no tie. A second series shows Mr. Alex in white shirt and tie, but apparently taken in the same general area, the boat landing across from Chapel Island.
