John Williams wears a hunting knife presented to him by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, on his visit to Nova Scotia, August to September 1869. John Williams and his father Paul were born at Williams Lake, on the north side of the outlet of Great Pubnico Lake, Yarmouth County. John's first wife was a Paul, daughter of "a chief at Stewiake," probably Francis Paul [Piers Notes, Nova Scotia Museum Printed Matter File, Mi'kmaq Genealogies]. John Thomas "Paddy" Lane was an Irish customs officer at Halifax who liked to dress up as a Mi'kmaq. Paddy Lane's Brook, near Shubenacadie, is named for him.
