IMAGE INFORMATION
John Williams was a famous guide; in his latter years he received a pension from one of his favourite clients, Lord Dunraven. He and his second wife, Madeleine, daughter of Louis Thomas and Mary Morris Thomas, had 12 or 14 children, all of whom died before reaching adulthood, except for their daughter Ruby. [Max Basque to R. H. Whitehead, July 1976, personal communication.] The snowshoes shown are those John Williams procured for Harry Piers' father, Henry, around 1885. They were perhaps borrowed back for the studio photograph. [Nova Scotia Museum Accession Book IV, 7634.] The photograph, published as a postcard, reads "78881/E. F. Heffler, Hfx, N.S./M. J. Co. Mtl [Montréal] No. 916." Heffler may be the photographer and/or the publisher.
