IMAGE INFORMATION

John Noel Cope was born in April 1843, and died 25 August 1918. He was a superb hunter in spite of the handicap of a withered arm. He was apparently called "John Bowlmaltie," a name translated in the accession record for the photo as "Standing in a Clear Place." This is more likely a corruption of 'Paul Martin', pronounced 'Pol Malti' in Mi'kmaq. [Bernie Francis to R. H. Whitehead, personal communication, November 1990.]
