This dead tree has become major food source for a wide variety of woodland creatures, including the Pileated woodpecker.

Carpenter ants have moved in. They aid in the old tree’s decomposition by breaking down the wood fibre and returning its nutrients to the soil. As the woodpecker drills into the tree for food, it also
helps to break down the wood.
