Data Description |
|
Abstract: |
A reconnaissance biogeochemical survey was conducted during a 3 week period beginning in early May 1991, and was funded by the Geological Survey of Canada as a Contribution to Canada - Nova Scotia Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development 1990-1992, a subsidiary agreement under the Economic and Regional Development Agreement. Samples were collected from approximately 500 sites within a 5000 sq.km area of southwestern Nova Scotia. The northern boundary of the survey area was latitude 44 15'. the eastern boundary was the Mersey River, with red spruce (Picea rubens) bark being selected as the principle sampling medium. The samples were analyzed for Au, Ag, As, Ba, Br, Ca, Co, Cr, Cs, Fe, Hf, K, Mo, Na, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sn, Sr, Ta, Th, U, W, Zn, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Yb, Lu, Al, B, Be, Cd, Cu, Li, Mg, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, Ti, and V.
This data set was previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. This data set was previously called of2556 and later renamed c130swcb.
Further information about the survey and analysis can be found in the draft documents: survey_description.wpd, elements.wb3 and fields.wb3 that are supplied with the data set. |

Survey Description:
A reconnaissance biogeochemical survey was conducted during a 3 week period beginning in early May 1991. Samples were collected from approximately 500 sites within a 5000 sq.km area of southwestern Nova Scotia. The northern boundary of the survey area was latitude 44 15'. the eastern boundary was the Mersey River. Although the average sample density was 1 per 10 sq. km the sampling grid was irregular because of difficulty in accessing some areas. red spruce (Picea rubens) bark was selected as the principle sampling medium. About 50 g of loose scales of the outer bark were collected at each site. However, tamarack (Larix laricina) bark and twigs from balsam fir (Abies balsamea), red spruce and tamarack were collected at most sites and data from these species will be presented in future Open File releases. The concentrations of 32 elements were determined by instrumental neutron activation (INA) analysis for 501 samples and 13 elements by inductively-coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-ES) for 487 samples. All data quoted are concentrations in ash remaining after controlled ignition at 470 C The user is urged to treat the interpretation of the biogeochemical data with caution, and to take into consideration the text notes provided for each element. |

In March 2001, the Branch, as part of the CGKN Geochemistry On-line project, began a program of creating detailed metadata about the regional geochemistry databases. The initial draft of the information compiled at this time is contained in a WordPerfect document and 2 Quattro Pro spreadsheets called: survey_description.wpd, elements.wb3 and fields.wb3. |

Description: |
In early 2006 the data set name was changed from OF2556 to C130SW and the data was converted from the UTM zone 20 NAD27 projection and datum to UTM zone 20 NAD83 coordinates. No other changes were made to the data. The data set was previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. In January 2006 it was broken out into its own digital product. |

Technical Prerequisite: |
In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. |
