Data Description |
|
Abstract: |
A regional centre lake bottom sampling survey was conducted in the Meguma zone in southern Nova Scotia from 1977-1978 and was funded by the 1975-1980 Canada Department of Regional Economic Expansion - Nova Scotia (DREE-NS) Mineral Development Agreement. A two-square mile grid was used in assuring that a representative sampling density was maintained. One lake in each grid square was sampled and approximately 4000 samples were collected in two years. Samples were analyzed for Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Co, Fe, Mn, Ca, Mg, Mo, Hg, U, and As.
In 1984, a Lake Sediment Sample Re-analysis was conducted, with funding as a project within the Canada - Nova Scotia Mineral Development agreement 1984-1989. Approximately 300 archived lake sediment samples from the 1977-1978 survey were submitted for analysis for As, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Th, Ti, Sb, Sn, Zr, Nb, Au, W, Rb, Li, and F.
This data set was previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. This data set previously consisted of
lks778b1 and lks85b1 which were later renamed c132sncd-a and c132sncd-b.
Further information about the survey and analysis can be found in the draft documents: survey_description_cd-a.wpd, survey_description_cd-b.wpd, elements_cd-a.wb3, elements_cd-b.wb3, fields_cd-a.wb3 and fields_cd-b.wb3 that are supplied with the data set. |
|
Purpose: |
The purpose of this project was to create a digital dataset in GIS format consisting of the lake sediment geochemistry of southern Nova Scotia. |

Survey Description:
The Lake Sediment Geochemical Survey was conducted in three separate studies; the original 1977-1978 Lake Geochemistry Survey (southern Nova Scotia), the 1983 Lake Sediment Survey (eastern Cape Breton) and the 1984 Lake Sediment Sample Re-analysis. As well, interpretations of the data-set have been published in a series of scientific papers and conference presentations. In 1977, a regional centre lake bottom sampling survey was conducted in the Meguma zone in southern Nova Scotia and continued into 1978. The Lake Sediment Geochemical Survey formed part of the National Geochemical Reconnaissance Program of the Geological Survey of Canada. It was the result of an unsuccessful attempt (due to problems with terrain features) to use stream silt geochemistry. These same terrain features result in the formation of a great number of lakes, making a lake sediment survey more practical. A two-square mile grid was used in assuring that a representative sampling density was maintained. One lake in each grid square was sampled and approximately 4000 samples were collected in two years. Geochemical analysis for Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn, U, As, Mg, Ca, Mo, Fe, and Hg are released in maps for each element. Although Ag, Cd and LOI were analyzed for, they yielded such low values that no map was produced.
Interpretation of the data set has been published in a series of scientific papers. A report on multi-element ratings maps for Meguma Zone lake sediments using data from the 1985 survey was released in 1989. |

No other changes were made to the data. The data set was previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. Technical Prerequisite: |
In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. |
