Data Description |
|
Abstract: |
This digital product includes all the stations that were collected as part of the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) Open File Report 95-005, "Reprocessing of Nova Scotia Gravity Data from the NSRFC Gravity Database (1952-1988) by K. Howells and E. D. Clarke", as well as an additional 633 gravity stations and some quality control fields added by Steve King under contract to MRB in early 2005. This data was part of Assessment Report AR ME 1997-101, "Salt, Stewiacke area, Hants and Colchester Counties, Nova Scotia. Report on a geological review of the property, an assessment of previous gravity and seismic surveys, an analysis of previous gauging data, and the collection of river oceanographic data", by Geomarine Associates Ltd. This product includes station locations, associated bouguer gravity values and other attributes located in the onshore and offshore areas of Nova Scotia. The digital product was created by MRB staff. |
|
Purpose: |
The purpose of this data set is to create a database of gravity stations and the measurements taken at them in the province of Nova Scotia. It is hoped that more gravity stations will be added to this database over time as data becomes available and time allows for it's incorporation. |

Positional Accuracy |
|
Positional Accuracy Report: |
There may be positional accuracy errors in the digital data that come from the original data collection. The data set contains data gathered from numerous surveys and the accuracy may vary between these. In January 2004 some inquires were received about the quality of some of the data contained in OFR ME 95-005. Steve King, a local geophysical contractor, was provided a contract to review the data and flag questionable data. In his e-mail to MRB one comment refered to questional positional accuracy. He stated:
I have added a quality ("Q") column: 1= good point; 0 = suspect point for some glaring errors. Note, that I have not inspected every point and there is not enough original control data for anyone to do this. Therefore it is somewhat subjective but I believe necessary; still without implying any absolute level of quality assuance. In a further description of the 'Q' field he indicated that a 0 value referred to a questionable gravity value or position.
The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it. |
|
Attribute Accuracy Report: |
In January 2004 inquires were received by MRB about the quality of some of the data contained in OFR ME 95-005. Steve King, a local geophysical contractor, was provided a contract to review the data and flag questionable data. Following is an excerpt provided by Steve to help identify questionable data. He outlines 5 points on the quality of the data:
A - STN_STATUS: Status description as per Howells and Clarke (1995): there are no "0" or "3" values and "4" values correspond to a questionable offshore data set. Values "1" and "2" correspond to station and grid surveys respectively.
B - I have added a quality ("Q") column: 1= good point; 0 = suspect point for some glaring errors. Note, that I have not inspected every point and there is not enough original control data for anyone to do this. Therefore it is somewhat subjective but I believe necessary; still without implying any absolute level of quality assuance.
C - To query the database to return the more accurate data tied to the national gravity net execute the following query which should generate 34,786 points:
- "NN_TIE=1 and STN_STATUS<4 and Q=1"
D - To query the database for grid surveys not tied to the national net execute the following query:
- "STN_STATUS=2 and NN_TIE=0";
- There are several relative surveys in the database not tied to the national gravity net; however, these data may be useful for detailed studies.
E - There are 633 archived stations added to the 2004 version of the Nova Scotia Gravity database in the Shubenacadie area. There are 125 not referenced to the National Gravity Net (NN_TIE=0).
The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it. |

Digital gravity point data contained on 4 floppy disks (3.5" disks labelled UTM data) provided as part of OFR ME 95-005 were used to create digital product DP ME 154. This set of 4 disks contained XY values as 6 degree UTM NAD27 coordinates. Four other disks containing the same data with latitude and longitude coordinates was not used. |

Description: |
Open File Report 95-005 included 8 floppy disks, containing digital gravity data, which were provided as part of the report. There were 2 sets of 4 disks each. Each set of 4 disks contained the gravity data points which comprised OFR 95-005. One set contained coordinates in 6 degree UTM NAD27 and the other in latitude / longitude. Each disk contained a single file with the data in a ASCII comma delimited format. |

Description: |
In January 2004 a contract was given to a local geophysical contractor, Steve King, to review the quality of data contained in OFR 95-005 and to add 633 new gravity data points contained in an assessment report for special exploration licence 3/96 (AR ME 1997-101). The data for the assessment report was supplied to NSNR&R by Alan Ruffman, Geomarine Associates Ltd., in a letter to NSNR&R October 2, 1997. Steve King combined the data into a single spreadsheet and added some fields to the tables identifying accuracy concerns with some of the data points. A description of the results of this work can be found in the positional accuracy section of this document.
Brian Fisher supplied the OFR 95-005 data to Steve King in a DBF format and a copy of the disks provided by Geomarine.
On January 27, 2004 Steve King, supplied NSNR&R with the new database containing new records and fields in a MS Excel spreadsheet called NS_GRAV_2004.XLS. |

Description: |
In October 2004 Brian Fisher took the excel spreadsheet called NS_GRAV_2004.XLS and imported it into ArcView. The data was then converted into a shapefile. Brian then created a new digital product called r154ns. This was done because new gravity maps created as part of the TGI-2 project used the new database and we needed a way to reference the data used to create the maps. NSNR&R also wanted to release the new gravity database to the public and create a Nova Scotia Gravity Database that data could be added to over time.
The NSNR&R MRB standard GIS fields were added to the database at this time. |

|
Technical Prerequisite: |
In order to view our digital files on your computer, you require mapping software (e.g. ArcGIS(R), ArcInfo(R), ArcView(R), MapInfo(R), AutoCAD(R)). If you do not have this software, ESRI* provides a FREE Map Viewer called ArcExplorer(R) which you can download over the Internet. ArcExplorer(R) works with our "E00", "SHP", "JPG", "SID" and "TIF" files. The "TIF" and "JPG" image file formats can be viewed in a number of graphics and image packages including CorelDraw* and Paint Shop Pro. The MRSID "SID" images can be viewed in an increasing number of image packages as well as with a FREE MRSID viewer supplied by LizardTech*.
In order to use the E00 format data you need to download both ArcExplorer(R) and the ArcExplorer(R) Import Utility (Import71.exe). The import utility is required to convert the ArcInfo "E00" files into ArcInfo coverages, which then can be viewed in ArcExplorer(R).
Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. |
