Natural Resources Strategy - What happened during Phase 3? Strategy development

Staff of the Department of Lands and Forestry led Phase 3 and developed The Path We Share – A Natural Resources Strategy for Nova Scotia 2010-2020. This 10-year strategy was developed using:

  • Phase 1 Report and Phase 2 report and recommendations
  • Natural Resources Strategy 2010 Guiding Principles
  • Nova Scotia government strategy development process guidelines
  • Input and analysis and evaluation by staff throughout the department

Department staff was involved in the Phase 3 process including a Strategy Team comprising all the Department's Directors and Executive Directors. This team met weekly. Others involved include a biomass and clearcut working group, an internal communications group, and the Phase 2 DNR Liaisons; other ad-hoc working groups as issues needing further analysis and research were identified.

During Phase 3, the department also commissioned Woodbridge Associates to analyze the economic impact associated with the province's target to reduce clearcutting and re-engage small, private woodlot owners. Their report recommends the province take measures to help ease the forestry sector's transition toward the province's clearcutting reduction target. The report also makes it clear that small private woodlot owners play a key role in the supply of wood fibre for the forest industry.
