Assess your physical shape. A few weeks at the gym will better prepare you for the extra exertion of winter activities. Otherwise start out slow and gradually build up endurance.

Plan clothing, equipment, and supplies to meet the changing weather, hazards, and emergencies you may encounter.

Check the weather forecast. If possible, continue to monitor forecasts during your trip.

Carry a map and compass, as well as a survival kit, and know how to use them.

Adopt a safe adventure attitude. Always tell someone the specific location you're travelling to, and what time you'll return.

Avoid going into remote areas alone. If you have any doubt about your outdoor skills, hire a guide, join an organized outing, or enroll in a wilderness course.

If you do get lost or stranded, stay put (easier for searchers to find you). Remain calm.
