Entries are judged on the basis of their effort and commitment to:

• having and meeting sustainable goals for their land.
• improving their knowledge or understanding of their woodland, or the forest in general.
• improving or maintaining the condition, access, and health of their woodland.
• integrated resource management or considering a variety of values for their land.
• the quality of harvesting or other silviculture activities.
• maintaining environmental quality on their woodlot.

More emphasis is placed on the woodlot owner than on the woodlot.
