Discussions Planned Regarding Native Logging

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Natural Resources Minister Kennie MacAskill is aware of the situation that has arisen this week regarding native harvesting on Crown land in Cumberland County.

Department of Natural Resources staff have been in contact with the Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq Fish and Wildlife Commission. The commission's co-chair will be meeting with these individuals and discussing the situation later today.

"It is unfortunate that this incidence has taken place," Mr. MacAskill said. "We would prefer to resolve this particular situation through dialogue. We have met over the past several months with the native community regarding the issue of native harvesting on Crown lands and we intend to continue with this process."

The minister is hopeful this matter can be resolved through discussions.

"We appreciate the co-operation that we've had with the Mi'kmaq community throughout the discussions."
