Ministers Laud Acid Rain Agreement

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotia's ministers of the environment and natural resources said they are encouraged with the signing of Canada-Wide Acid Rain Strategy for Post 2000.

Environment Minister Don Downe said today's agreement obliges everybody to do their part. "I am pleased with the support for Nova Scotia's position on this issue," said Mr. Downe. "We are at a geographical disadvantage when it comes to acid rain, and know all too well the damage that can be caused by harmful acid-causing emissions."

Kennie MacAskill, Minister of Natural Resources, said the strategy sets the tone for dealing with this serious problem. "This strategy has been struck by working together," said Mr. MacAskill. "Only by working with other jurisdictions can we begin to deal with what has been a serious problem for Nova Scotia."

The Canada-Wide Acid Rain Strategy for Post 2000 fulfils the commitment by ministers in their 1994 Statement of Intent on Long-Term Acid Rain Management in Canada. It builds on the success of the 1985 Eastern Canada Acid Rain Program, which has achieved a 50 per cent reduction in sulphur dioxide emissions in Eastern Canada since 1980.

The agreement was signed today by all provinces, territories and the federal government during the Joint Meeting of Energy and Environment Ministers being held in Halifax.
