Change in Hunter Education Program

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

The delivery of the Hunter Education Program in Nova Scotia has been changed, Natural Resources Minister Kennie MacAskill announced today.

On April 1, the Department of Natural Resources entered into an agreement with the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters, formerly the Nova Scotia Wildlife Federation, for the federation to take over co-ordination and delivery of the program. In the past the program had been co-ordinated by Natural Resources.

The program consists of ecology and wildlife management, ethics and responsibilities, hunting laws and regulations, hunter survival and field techniques.

The cost for the training is $20. Applications can be obtained by contacting the federation by phone or fax at 902-423-6793, from any field office of the Department of Natural Resources, or from the Department of Natural Resources homepage at www.gov.ns.ca/natr .

Before people can register for the Hunter Education Program, they must complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course, which is co-ordinated by the Nova Scotia Community College, in co-operation with the Department of Justice. The cost for firearms training is $50.00. To register for the safety course, contact your nearest community college.

All first time hunters and those wanting to carry a firearm for hunting must complete both courses to obtain a Firearm Hunting Certificate. All hunters are reminded that they are required to have and carry a certificate while hunting.

It is suggested that interested people register early for both training programs to avoid any last minute rush and possible disappointment because of waiting lists.
