Minister Accepts Recommendations of Kaufman Report

Justice

Justice Minister Robbie Harrison today accepted recommendations made by retired justice Fred Kaufman following his review of Nova Scotia's Public Prosecution Service.

"Mr. Kaufman has left no doubt that the service is both independent and accountable," said Mr. Harrison. "The model works for Nova Scotia. The service has operated independently and, most importantly, free from political interference."

The minister committed to implementing the recommendations within the purview of government. He noted that many of the recommendations must be implemented by the Public Prosecution Service itself, and he committed to supporting the director in their implementation.

The review of the service and its operations was commissioned in June 1998. The report, presented by Mr. Kaufman on June 9, 1999, also examined the issue of independence and accountability.
