Parks Days Celebrations, July 17

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Parks Day will be celebrated Saturday, July 17, at a number of provincial parks in Nova Scotia.

The third Saturday in July has been set aside for many years as Parks Day in national, provincial, territorial and municipal parks across the country.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to enjoy our parks and the outdoors," said Natural Resources Minister Kennie MacAskill. "We are lucky to have many parks in this province and I hope all Nova Scotians and visitors to our province will participate by visiting a park or joining in some of the events."

There are more than 120 parks in the provincial system. They range from small daytime picnic sites to campgrounds and beaches.

Highlights this year are at Dollar Lake Provincial Park in Halifax County and Whycocomagh Provincial Park in Inverness County. Events at Dollar Lake include canoeing, orienteering, a scavenger hike and wildlife bingo. The 40th anniversary of the Whycocomagh Park will be celebrated with a summer festival and the opening of a new comfort station.

Some of the other events planned in the province for Parks Day, through the Parks Are for People and Take A Hike programs, are:

  • Cumberland County: interpretations of geological features and processes at the Cape Chignecto Provincial Park; includes a scenic walk

  • Kings County: kite-making at Blomidon Provincial Park

  • Annapolis County: a walk through the Upper Clements Wildlife Park

  • Yarmouth County: a natural history walk through Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park

  • Queens County: a picnic at Thomas Raddall Provincial Park

  • Lunenburg County: nature walk and wildlife identification at Graves Island Provincial Park

  • Guysborough County: hoedown on the hill and fireworks at Boylston Provincial Park

  • Richmond County: a cultural history walk through Battery Provincial Park

  • Halifax County: discovery of Cole Harbour while walking through Cole Harbour Heritage Provincial Park

Schedules with more information on these events and other Parks Are for People activities are available at Department of Natural Resources offices and tourist information centres.
