Justice

Dr. Vernon Franklin Bowes has been appointed interim chief medical examiner for the province of Nova Scotia, Justice Minister Michael Baker announced today.

Dr. Bowes received a medical degree from Dalhousie University in 1967, a fellowship in pathology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1975 and a masters in business administration from Saint Mary's University in 1994.

He has served as a medical examiner and pathologist with the province since 1995, and currently acts as a consultant pathologist with the Hants Community Hospital, the Halifax County Rehabilitation Centre and the Nova Scotia Hospital. He has also served as a lecturer in pathology at Dalhousie University and as chief of laboratory medicine at the Dartmouth General Hospital.

Dr. Bowes is a member of a number of professional organizations, including: the Canadian Association of Pathologists; the Medical Society of Nova Scotia; the American Society of Clinical Pathology and the American College of Physician Executives.

He has served on a number of local and national committees including the specialty committee in general pathology for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, and he has chaired the economics council for the Medical Society of Nova Scotia.

"Dr. Bowes brings a great deal of professionalism, skills and expertise to this extremely important position," Mr. Baker said.
"We are delighted he has agreed to take on this challenge and I am confident he will serve Nova Scotians well."

As an initial search did not identify a permanent chief medical examiner, Dr. Bowes has agreed to take on the role for one year.
